How did it start

Originating from Taiwan in the 1980s, Bubble Tea remains one of the most popular drinks in the country. However, it is not clear who first discovered this unique drink. One theory is that the teahouse's product development manager added tapioca pudding to his iced tea during a staff meeting. Later when it was added to the tea house's menu, this sweet and refreshing drink became an instant hit.

How to do it

Classic bubble tea consists of 3 main components: tea base, tapioca pearls and milk. Most bubbles have a base made of black tea, but you can also find bubbles made from teas such as white, green, and oolong. Tapioca pearls are balls that are located at the bottom of the cup and are usually black or transparent but can be coloured or flavoured. Then add milk, powdered milk, sweetened condensed milk or some kind of milk substitute. Balloon tea is usually sweetened and can be made in a variety of flavours and garnishes.

It is not called bubble tea because of the tapioca pearls that look like bubbles at the bottom of the cup. Conversely, bubble tea is said to have got its name due to the layer of foamy bubbles that form on it after the mixture is shaken.
